Impact of war on the energy sector
From October 2022 to September 2024, the Russian Federation carried out over 1,000 strikes on Ukraine's energy infrastructure, damaging or destroying all major thermal and hydroelectric power plants.
As a result of the occupation and attacks during 2022-2023, the energy system of Ukraine lost almost 21 GW capacity. In 2024, losses from the missile and drone campaign are estimated at over 9 GW. In addition to generation, Russia also regularly attacks critical nodes of electricity transmission networks. Attacks were also directed at gas storage facilities and other gas infrastructure facilities.
